Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says Mexico won’t allow U.S. troops on its soil after Trump proposed deeper military involvement against drug cartels.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she rejected an offer from U.S. President Donald Trump to send American troops into Mexico to combat drug trafficking, declaring that Mexico’s “sovereignty is not for sale.”

Sheinbaum said Trump made the proposal during a phone call, but she firmly declined, telling him, “We will never accept the presence of the United States army in our territory.”

Her comments follow a Wall Street Journal report claiming Trump has been pressuring Mexico to allow “deeper U.S. military involvement” in operations against drug cartels.

A spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council said Trump has been clear that Mexico must do more to combat gangs and cartels, adding that the U.S. is ready to expand cooperation between the two countries.

Since taking office in January, Trump has repeatedly criticized both Mexico and Canada for allowing illegal drugs — particularly fentanyl — to cross into the U.S. His administration has also linked the fight against trafficking to its push for steep tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods.
