Ukrainian lawmakers are expected to vote on a new government this week after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unexpectedly dismissed Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, saying the shake-up is needed to bring "renewal" as the country faces mounting wartime challenges.

Zelenskyy said he wants a refreshed leadership team to strengthen Ukraine's push for more air defence support, advance its European Union membership bid and prepare for another winter of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Lawmakers have named Naftogaz chief Serhiy Koretskyi, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal and Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov among the leading candidates to become prime minister. Under Ukraine's system, the president nominates the prime minister, who then forms a cabinet subject to parliamentary approval.

Analysts say Koretskyi's experience in the energy sector could make him a strong choice as Ukraine seeks to protect its power infrastructure. Others have suggested Fedorov's leadership in defence and military technology makes him a viable contender, although critics warn moving him from the defence ministry could disrupt ongoing military reforms.

Opposition figures have questioned the timing of the reshuffle, arguing it risks creating instability during a critical stage of the war with Russia. Some also accuse Zelenskyy's administration of relying on a small circle of loyalists rather than bringing in new leadership.

The government overhaul follows a series of wartime cabinet changes, with elections remaining suspended under martial law, leaving reshuffles as one of the few ways to alter Ukraine's political leadership.
