Ukrainian President Zelenskiyy said Kyiv cannot reclaim Crimea by force, as tensions grow over Trump’s peace plan proposal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy has said Ukraine does not have enough weapons to retake Crimea from Russia by military means.
Tensions over Crimea resurfaced this week after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Zelenskiyy for reaffirming that Kyiv would never recognize the peninsula as Russian territory.
Zelenskiyy’s remarks come as Crimea has become a central point in Trump’s proposed peace plan, which reportedly includes a condition for Ukraine to accept Russia’s annexation of the region.
Zelenskiyy has pointed to a 2018 "Crimea Declaration" by Trump's then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in which the United States rejected "Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea" and pledged to uphold Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
The Ukrainian president’s implication is that Trump supported Ukraine’s position on Crimea then and should maintain that stance now.
