President Xi Jinping met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Friday, calling for stronger strategic cooperation as China and Spain mark the 20th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership.
During talks held in Beijing, President Xi Jinping expressed China’s readiness to build a comprehensive strategic partnership with Spain that reflects deeper strategic focus and fresh developmental vitality. This year marks two decades since the two countries formally established their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Xi said China is committed to working with Spain to enhance the well-being of their peoples and to contribute positively to China-EU relations and global peace and stability. He called for continued political trust and mutual support, especially on issues concerning sovereignty and territorial integrity.
With China’s population of over 1.4 billion undergoing consumption growth and industrial transformation, Xi said this momentum offers valuable opportunities for the global economy. He emphasized that China is eager to leverage complementary strengths in cooperation with Spain, particularly in fields such as new energy, high-tech manufacturing, and smart city development.
He also proposed strengthening cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges, including expanding student exchange programs to foster mutual understanding.
Highlighting shared values, Xi noted that both China and Spain advocate for multilateralism and open cooperation. He urged both countries to support a fair global governance system, uphold world peace and security, and promote common development.
Prime Minister Sanchez praised the consistent mutual respect and friendly cooperation that has defined bilateral relations over the past 20 years. He reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to the one-China policy and said his country values its relationship with China.
Sanchez expressed Spain’s desire to expand cooperation in various fields and maintain high-level exchanges. He also reaffirmed Spain’s support for stable and constructive relations between the European Union and China.
