British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call on Sunday evening to discuss “productive negotiations” aimed at establishing a UK-U.S. economic prosperity deal, according to a Downing Street spokesperson.
The leaders agreed that negotiations would continue throughout the week and promised to stay in touch in the coming days, the Downing Street statement said.
Britain is hoping to negotiate a deal with the United States to avoid a broader round of reciprocal tariffs, which Trump’s administration plans to announce on April 2.
On Friday, Trump signaled that he is open to making deals with countries looking to avoid U.S. tariffs. However, he noted that such agreements would need to be negotiated after the announcement of reciprocal levies. Trump mentioned that several countries, including Britain, had already approached the U.S. to explore potential deals.
The discussions between Starmer and Trump highlight ongoing efforts to prevent economic conflict and strengthen trade relations between the two countries.
