Canadian PM Mark Carney expected to call a federal election for April 28, government sources say.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to call for federal elections on Sunday.
According to government sources, Carney will ask the country’s governor general to dissolve Parliament and set a national election for April 28.
The election campaign—due by October but callable at any time by the prime minister—will then officially begin.
With Canadian businesses struggling amid a trade dispute with the United States, Carney, a former two-time central banker, is expected to position himself as the most capable candidate to confront U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney became Liberal leader and prime minister after Justin Trudeau resigned in January, following a slump in party polling and an internal cabinet revolt.
A recent surge in Canadian nationalism has boosted Liberal poll numbers in response to Trump’s repeated calls for Canada to become the 51st U.S. state.
