New York has declared a state of emergency as brush fires force evacuations and shut down a major highway.
New York has declared a state of emergency as brush fires spread across Long Island and near Brooklyn, sending thick smoke into the air and shutting down a major highway.
Firefighters, with air support from National Guard helicopters, are battling the flames, according to Governor Kathy Hochul.
NASA satellite data shows fire and smoke stretching approximately 2.5 miles along Sunrise Highway.
High winds have intensified the fires, forcing the evacuation of a military base.
The cause remains unknown, though around the same time videos of the fires surfaced online, the Town of Southampton issued a wildfire risk warning against recreational fires.
No injuries have been reported.
