Britain’s Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds will meet India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Monday to restart trade talks between the two countries, aiming for a new economic deal.
Britain and India are set to resume negotiations on a trade deal, with discussions taking place in New Delhi. Britain's Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized the importance of securing an agreement, calling India “soon-to-be the third biggest economy in the world.”
This marks the first formal negotiation since Britain’s Labour Party took power in 2024. Talks were halted last March after failing to finalise an agreement before Indian elections.
Key sticking points include tariffs on British whisky and India’s demand for more visas for Indian students and businesses.
The two-day talks aim to strengthen the trade relationship between the world’s fifth and sixth largest economies, which is currently valued at £41 billion ($51.8 billion).
