A senior U.S. military commander is visiting Panama this week to discuss security cooperation, migration, and the Panama Canal, the U.S. embassy confirmed Wednesday.
Admiral Alvin Holsey, head of the U.S. Southern Command, is meeting with Panamanian officials on Wednesday and Thursday. The visit comes as U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration raises concerns over China’s influence on the Panama Canal, a key global trade passage.
The canal, which handles about 5% of world trade, has been a focal point of Washington’s regional security discussions. The U.S. is also expected to address migration issues, as Panama remains a major transit hub for northbound migrants.
