The United States has announced more than $3.6 million in humanitarian assistance for Nepal following devastating floods that have killed at least 734 people and left thousands unaccounted for.
The aid package includes emergency food assistance for up to 10,000 households affected by the disaster, as search and rescue operations continue along the Nepal-Tibet border.
The disaster began on Wednesday (26 August) when part of a glacier in the Himalayas collapsed, sending huge volumes of water downstream and triggering catastrophic flooding in communities along the border.
The scale of the flooding has made rescue operations particularly difficult, with nearly 3,000 people still needing to be located or accounted for.
Among those affected are foreign tourists, including around 100 Americans.
“There is no higher priority for us than the safety of American citizens,” the U.S. State Department said in a post on X.
“Our embassies in Nepal and China are working closely to assist Americans and support disaster relief efforts.”
Nepal's disaster management agency said 589 foreign nationals were among those reported missing in the country.
The Nepal Tourism Board said 261 foreign nationals had so far been rescued, highlighting the particular impact on tourists caught in remote areas close to the border.
Rescue teams have been working to reach isolated communities and locate those still missing as authorities assess the full extent of the destruction.
