Google Maps will soon rename the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America" in the US, following a change in the US Geographic Names System, the company confirmed on January 27.
Google Maps will change the name of the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America" once it is officially updated in the US Geographic Names System, Alphabet's Google said in an X post on Monday (January 27).
The change will be visible in the US, but the name will remain "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico. Outside of the two countries, users will see both names on Google Maps. Reached for comment, a Google spokesperson referred Reuters to the company's X post.
The Trump administration's Interior Department announced on January 24 that it had officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as well as renaming the Alaskan peak Denali (previously known as Mount McKinley), the tallest mountain in North America.
President Donald Trump ordered the name changes as part of a series of executive actions shortly after taking office on January 20, fulfilling a campaign promise.
