The Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak has continued to worsen, with authorities reporting that confirmed cases have risen to 2,423, including 967 deaths, highlighting the scale of one of the region's most serious public health emergencies.
The latest figures come as controversy grows in neighbouring Kenya over reports that American aid workers evacuated from Congo are being quarantined at a facility linked to a U.S.-backed Ebola response programme.
According to humanitarian organisation Samaritan's Purse, seven American staff members who had been working in Congo are currently undergoing a 21-day quarantine period in Kenya. The group said none of the workers had shown symptoms of Ebola.
Kenyan activists on Monday accused the government of violating a court order issued last month that halted the establishment of an American-backed Ebola quarantine centre.
The facility was intended to accommodate U.S. citizens evacuated from Congo as authorities sought to prevent the spread of the virus beyond the country's borders.
Local media reports have suggested that military tents at Laikipia Air Base, about 185 kilometres north of Nairobi, could be used to host the quarantine operation. However, Kenyan authorities have not publicly confirmed the location.
Neither Kenya's Ministry of Health nor the U.S. State Department immediately responded to requests for comment regarding reports that Americans were being quarantined in the country.
The quarantine plans have sparked opposition among residents in the town of Nanyuki near the air base. Demonstrations against the proposed facility have taken place in recent weeks, with unrest turning deadly after two people were killed during violent protests.
The dispute underscores concerns across the region as health authorities work to contain the outbreak while balancing public fears about the movement of potentially exposed individuals.
