Russian missiles struck the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and the surrounding region early on Sunday, killing at least one person and wounding 13 others as fires broke out across the city, officials said.
A series of powerful explosions rocked Kyiv overnight as Ukraine's air force warned of a ballistic missile threat. Fires broke out at a dormitory, an apartment building and a supermarket, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.
Several non-residential buildings and warehouses were also damaged in the attack, while parked cars and office buildings caught fire in several districts, Klitschko said.
Emergency workers were deployed to multiple locations across three city districts, where crews searched through debris and extinguished fires at damaged buildings.
A Kyiv resident, who identified himself as Vlad, said he was inside his apartment when a blast tore off his balcony door and hit him.
"My grandmother lives with me, and she can't walk. How could I run away and leave her behind?" he said.
Ukraine says Russia intensifies missile attacks
Ukrainian officials said Russian forces have increased ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, as Ukraine faces shortages of critical air defence systems.
Russia's latest attack came as Ukraine's military reported strikes on Russian targets in the Black Sea.
Ukraine reports strikes on Russian vessels
Ukraine's General Staff said Ukrainian forces hit two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea overnight. It added that a floating crane in the Sea of Azov was also targeted, with all three locations allegedly being used to support Russia's war efforts.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia had launched its largest number of ballistic missiles in a single attack since the start of the full-scale war.
"Russia unleashed the largest number of ballistic missiles since the start of the war- around four dozen- in a brutal terrorist attack on the Ukrainian capital, killing and injuring people," Sybiha wrote on X.
He called for stronger international measures against Moscow, saying pressure was needed to stop what he described as continued attacks on Ukraine.
