A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a motorist in Houston on Tuesday during an attempt to stop his vehicle as part of what authorities described as a targeted immigration enforcement operation.

ICE identified the man as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, whom the agency described as a Mexican national living in the United States illegally. According to ICE, Salgado attempted to evade arrest during the operation and was later shot by an officer.

In a statement, ICE said Salgado "rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponised his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer."

The agency said the officer opened fire in self-defence, striking the driver. Salgado was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Family disputes circumstances

Ronaldo Salgado, who identified himself to Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo Houston as the victim's son, gave a different account of the incident.

He said his father was seeking workers for hire in the area when the shooting occurred.

Reuters said it was unable to independently verify Salgado's immigration status or the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.

Investigation details unclear

Neither the FBI nor the Department of Homeland Security, ICE's parent agency, immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the shooting.

The incident comes amid ongoing scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement operations and the use of force by officers.

In several cases over the past year, initial accounts provided by immigration authorities have later been challenged by video footage or other evidence.

One such case involved Marimar Martinez, a woman in the Chicago area who was accused by authorities in October of ramming law enforcement officers with her vehicle. Martinez survived after being shot five times, and charges against her were eventually dropped. Video evidence later raised questions about whether agents may have struck her vehicle themselves.

It remains unclear whether any video footage exists of Tuesday's shooting in Houston or whether independent investigations will be launched into the circumstances surrounding Salgado's death.
