Ukraine–Russia–U.S. talks end without breakthrough as fighting continues

Ukraine and Russia have ended a second day of U.S.-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi without reaching an agreement, although both sides said further discussions were likely next weekend. The talks concluded as overnight Russian air strikes cut electricity and heating to large parts of Ukraine during sub-zero winter temperatures. Statements issued after the meetings did not point to any concrete progress, but Moscow and Kyiv said they remained open to continued dialogue under U.S. mediation.

U.S. immigration agents kill citizen in Minneapolis

U.S. immigration agents have shot and killed a U.S. citizen in Minneapolis, officials said, triggering protests and condemnation from local leaders. It is the second such incident reported this month. The Department of Homeland Security described the shooting as an act of self-defence, saying a Border Patrol agent opened fire after a man approached with a handgun and violently resisted efforts to disarm him.

Syria extends truce with Kurdish-led forces
