China will lead the creation of an open source platform among BRICS members to promote cooperation on large language models, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Sunday.
Xi said that BRICS countries should also accelerate efforts to establish a global artificial intelligence (AI) governance framework, as well as deepen trade ties, in remarks at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India.
The AI initiative would include establishing “specialised research and training on AI” for BRICS countries, with the aim of “building an open ecosystem for AI”, a readout of Xi’s speech from state broadcaster CCTV said.
He also proposed the development of a special economic zone for BRICS companies, adding that China would host a BRICS Service Trade Forum next year to boost trade and investment ties.
BRICS should “lay a solid foundation for practical cooperation,” he added.
At the summit's closing session, Xi said that 'Greater BRICS' nations should further co-operate, maintain the stability of industrial and supply chains, and cultivate an integrated market.
BRICS, an acronym for the grouping's founding and early members, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, positions itself as a counterweight to Western-led institutions such as the G7.
The bloc now also includes Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as full members, in addition to around 10 partner countries.
China and Russia sometimes refer to this larger bloc as “Greater BRICS”.
The benefits of solutions developed within BRICS should not stay limited to BRICS alone, but should be made adaptable and accessible to meet the needs of the Global South, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in remarks earlier.

The summit comes amid renewed fighting in the Middle East between Iran and the U.S., as well as a fresh wave of fighting between the Iran-backed Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
