Swiss authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the managers of a bar where at least 40 people died in a New Year’s fire.
The tragic fire occurred at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana during New Year celebrations, leaving 40 dead and over 100 injured. Prosecutors said the bar’s two managers are being investigated for negligent homicide, negligent bodily harm, and causing a fire by negligence.
Witnesses reported seeing staff using champagne bottles with sparkler-style candles in the basement shortly before the blaze erupted. Authorities noted that fire safety standards may not have been fully followed.
Swiss Federal Councillor for Justice Beat Jans said officials are working to clarify responsibilities and ensure accountability for the victims.
Local residents at a tribute for the victims called for an independent investigation. Patricia Mazzoni said videos suggested the bar was not up to standard, while Sandra Cordonnier emphasized the need to confirm all facts before drawing conclusions.
Prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud said all leads are being explored and stressed the seriousness of the investigation, including possible arson by negligence. Families are still awaiting full identification of victims, including several teenagers from Switzerland and Italy.
