Tensions between Washington and Tehran have found a new focal point regarding border control, as the Iranian government confirmed on Sunday that a fresh wave of nationals expelled from the United States is due to arrive within days.
Fifty-five Iranians are scheduled to return to the Islamic Republic this week, marking the second major deportation operation under President Donald Trump’s renewed immigration enforcement measures. The transfer follows a similar operation in September, during which a flight carrying 120 individuals was routed to Tehran via Doha, Qatar.
According to Iranian officials, the United States has identified approximately 400 Iranian nationals for removal. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed the latest developments on Sunday, framing the expulsions as politically motivated.
"In the coming days, about 55 nationals will return to Iran... This is the second group being returned to Iran in the latest months," Baghaei said, asserting that the deportations were driven by "anti-migrant policies that are against international law".
A Rare Channel of Communication
The logistical coordination required to repatriate citizens marks a rare instance of functional engagement between two adversaries that severed formal diplomatic ties more than four decades ago. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the subsequent US Embassy hostage crisis, Washington and Tehran have had no direct line of communication.
Instead, the two nations rely on intermediaries to manage necessary consular and security affairs. While Switzerland formally represents US interests in Tehran, regional power broker Qatar has increasingly acted as a go-between for prisoner swaps and, recently, logistical coordination for these deportation flights.
Baghaei noted that the current transfers were arranged through these "interest protection offices" and intermediaries, rather than direct dialogue.
Wider Geopolitical Context
The deportations come against a backdrop of heightened hostility regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Washington maintains that Tehran is pursuing the capability to build a nuclear weapon—a charge the Iranian leadership consistently denies, insisting their programme is solely for civilian energy and medical purposes.
The return of Donald Trump to the White House has signalled a return to the "maximum pressure" campaigns characteristic of his previous term, combining strict economic sanctions with hardline immigration enforcement targeting nationals from countries deemed adversarial.
Visa Row Overshadows World Cup Preparations
The diplomatic freeze has also spilled over into the sporting arena. With the United States set to co-host the 2026 World Cup, pre-tournament formalities have been marred by visa disputes.
Baghaei criticised Washington for refusing to grant visas to the entirety of Iran's football delegation for the World Cup draw, which took place on Friday in Washington D.C.
"We have expressed our protest against the US's decision not to give visas for our team dispatched to the World Cup draw," Baghaei stated.
While the Iranian federation applied for nine visas for its delegation, only four were granted, according to spokesman Amir Mehdi Alavi. The approvals included head coach Ardeshir Amir Ghalenoei, but the exclusions have been viewed in Tehran as a petty extension of political grievances into international sport.
The US State Department maintains strict visa vetting processes for Iranian nationals, often citing security concerns, a policy that has long complicated cultural and academic exchanges between the two nations.
The collective-defence agreement between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signals that regional powers no longer want to rely solely on external security guarantees. Whether it becomes a stabilising deterrent or another axis of rivalry remains unresolved.
