China on Monday called on the European Union to honour its commitments under the Paris climate agreement, emphasising that green cooperation remains central to China-EU ties.
“Both sides actively support low-carbon transition and green development, firmly uphold the international climate governance system,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said during a press conference in Beijing.
She described climate cooperation as a shared interest, stressing that climate change poses a global challenge requiring joint action.
“China, while adjusting its energy mix and pursuing green development, is also working closely with the rest of the world to actively contribute to global climate governance,” she added.
Mao cited projects such as the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, the Thrace Wind Project in Greece, and Germany’s Dollen solar park as examples of successful China-EU collaboration.
“China is committed to green and low-carbon development,” she said, noting that non-fossil fuels now make up 17.9% of the country’s energy consumption and that carbon intensity has fallen by more than 34% in the last decade.
Her comments followed reports that the EU may postpone a joint climate declaration with China unless Beijing agrees to deeper emissions cuts.
“We stand ready to work with the EU to uphold multilateralism, fulfill the goals identified in the Paris Agreement, strengthen cooperation on mitigation and adaptation and green and low-carbon transition, and contribute to better global climate governance,” Mao said.
