President Ilham Aliyev today inaugurated Azerbaijan's largest power plant in Mingachevir, constructed in partnership with Italian and Chinese companies.
“Today marks another important milestone in the development of our national energy sector. The "8 November" Power Plant, with a capacity of 1,880 megawatts, is now the largest power facility in our country. This newly constructed plant will further enhance our energy potential, improve the efficiency of the power system, and solidify Mingachevir’s status as the energy hub not only of Azerbaijan but of the entire South Caucasus region. Currently, over 40 percent of our electricity is generated in Mingachevir, and all of these achievements clearly demonstrate that Azerbaijan is on the right path,” - President Ilham Aliyev stated at the inaguation ceremony today.
Mingachevir has been considered the center of Azerbaijan’s power industry since 1974, when construction of the “Azerbaijan” Thermal Power Plant began in the city. Currently, the “Azerbaijan” Thermal Power Plant has a generation capacity of 1,800 megawatts, the “8 November” Power Plant adds 1,880 megawatts, and the Hydroelectric Power Plant contributes over 400 megawatts. As a result, more than 40 percent of Azerbaijan’s electricity is produced in Mingachevir, reaffirming its role as the primary energy center not only of Azerbaijan but also of the entire South Caucasus region.
President Ilham Aliyev praised the contributions of Italian and Chinese companies for completing the construction of the plant in a short period of time.
"Italy and China are both strategic and leading trade partners of Azerbaijan. Our cooperation with Italy has been long-standing and strategic, particularly in the energy sector, including crude oil and natural gas. In recent years, we have also expanded our collaboration with China, especially in the area of renewable energy. I should highlight that much of the equipment for the new solar power plants currently under construction in Azerbaijan is being supplied by Chinese companies. This demonstrates that both nations are not only vital strategic allies but also key economic partners. As I previously mentioned, our political relations are at an exceptionally high level, and this project stands as a strong example of successful international cooperation," - Aliyev added.
He stated that Azerbaijan plans to generate 6,500 megawatts of green energy by 2030, significantly boosting its current power generation capacity of 9,000 megawatts.
Italy’s Minister for Enterprises and "Made in Italy" Adolfo Urso, CEO of the Italian company Ansaldo Energia Fabrizio Fabbri, Chairman of the Board of China’s Dongfang company Chen Qiang, and Director of Energy Production Operations at AzerEnergy JSC Uzeyir Yusifov attended the ceremony as well.
Additionally, prospects for cooperation between “AzerEnergy” and “Ansaldo Energia” were discussed.
