Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Moscow remains open to dialogue and negotiations on all issues, including Ukraine. He made these remarks during a traditional meeting with the heads of leading global news agencies held as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum SPIEF
Putin noted that, two years ago, there had been regular discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other European leaders. However, he said, these contacts were halted at the initiative of Western partners. “They were the ones who ended the communication. Let them restore it. We are open to it—I’ve said this many times,” the Russian leader emphasized.
The president also expressed doubt about Germany’s potential to act as a mediator in the conflict. “A mediator must be neutral. But when we see German Leopard tanks on the battlefield, and when Germany is considering supplying Taurus missiles for strikes on Russian territory—with Bundeswehr officers reportedly involved—serious questions arise,” Putin said.
According to him, such steps may not significantly affect the course of military operations but could seriously damage bilateral relations. “At present, Germany is not seen by Russia as a neutral party, but rather as a supporter of Ukraine, sometimes even a direct participant in the fighting,” he added.
Nevertheless, Putin stressed that Russia is willing to discuss any proposal: “If there is a desire to talk on this topic, we are always ready to consider ideas,” he concluded.
The meeting, moderated by Mikhail Gusman, First Deputy Director General of TASS, brought together media representatives from Azerbaijan, Belarus, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Germany, Indonesia, Spain, Kazakhstan, China, the United States, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, and France.
