Airstrikes between Israel and Iran escalate tensions

Smoke rises over Tehran as Israeli airstrikes and Iranian missile attacks push regional tensions to the brink. Dozens of civilian casualties have been reported on both sides.

Plumes of smoke rose over Tehran after police buildings were reportedly hit by Israeli airstrikes, Iran’s WANA news agency reported on Wednesday (June 18).

Israel has launched large-scale military operations against Iran, targeting some of the country’s most critical nuclear facilities.

Since Friday (June 13), Iran has fired more than 400 ballistic missiles at Israel, triggering air raid sirens and forcing civilians to seek shelter. According to Israeli authorities, at least 24 civilians have been killed in the attacks so far.

Iran, for its part, has reported at least 224 deaths, mostly civilians, though that figure has not been updated in recent days.
