The Russian state news agency RIA said Friday that Russia has conducted its first test flight from Moscow to the recently renovated airport in Sukhumi, the capital of Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia.
After being shut down during a war in the 1990s, RIA announced that long-distance flights to Sukhumi were starting up again for the first time in thirty years.
According to the report, regular passenger flights from Moscow to Abkhazia are anticipated to start operating in May.
After defeating Georgia in a five-day conflict, Russia recognized Abkhazia and another breakaway province, South Ossetia, as independent entities in 2008. It supports their economy and keeps military installations in both areas.
