Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has welcomed the UK's Minister of State for Defence Lord Vernon Coaker in Baku on Thursday 4th December.
Lord Vernon Coaker expressed his satisfaction with the meeting and passed on the greetings of the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to President Aliyev.
Emphasising the friendly and trust-based relations between Azerbaijan and the UK, Lord Vernon Coaker highlighted their shared interest in further developing the relationship into a strategic partnership.
President Ilham Aliyev thanked Lord Coaker for the greetings and asked him to convey his own greetings to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The President also warmly recalled Keir Starmer's participation in COP29 and their previous meeting.
The President noted that the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the UK have a rich history, beginning with cooperation in the energy sector and later expanding into other areas. He pointed out that there are significant opportunities for further collaboration in trade, investment amongst others.
President Aliyev also mentioned the recent developments in the defence industry cooperation between the two nations, describing it as a clear sign of mutual trust.
Lord Vernon Coaker congratulated President Aliyev on the progress made in Washington this August regarding the normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the advancement of the peace agenda.
Also present at the meeting was the UK ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld who in a post on X said, "Defence is a cornerstone of our Strategic Partnership".
Auld said both countries would discuss future opportunities in the defence sector while applauding the progress made over the past year.
In response, President Ilham Aliyev expressed gratitude for the congratulations, underlining the historical importance of these developments and recognising the key role played by U.S. President Donald Trump. He also reaffirmed that Azerbaijan initiated the peace agenda and would continue its efforts to advance it.
