Azerbaijan has summoned Russia’s ambassador in Baku after an Iskander missile from overnight strikes on Kyiv landed inside the Azerbaijani Embassy compound, causing significant structural damage but no casualties.
Mikhail Yevdokimov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Azerbaijan, was urgently summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the meeting, officials conveyed a strong protest and handed over a diplomatic note regarding the missile strike that hit the Azerbaijani Embassy grounds in Kyiv around 01:00 a.m.
According to the Ministry, the impact of the Iskander type missile led to the complete destruction of part of the perimeter wall and caused serious structural damage to the administrative building, consular facilities, service vehicles and other areas of the diplomatic compound. It was noted with relief that the attack did not result in any casualties.
The Ministry underlined that this was not the first time Azerbaijani diplomatic sites in Ukraine had been affected by Russian airstrikes. Officials referred to the 10 March 2022 strike on the Honorary Consulate in Kharkiv, which severely damaged the building and destroyed a service vehicle.
The statement also highlighted that on 2 January 2024 a Kinzhal missile strike created a crater roughly 3 metres wide only 35 steps from the Embassy’s administrative building, with an unexploded ordnance later discovered at a depth of 8 metres.
The MFA further recalled incidents on 28 August 2025, when another airstrike near the Embassy caused serious damage to the administrative building, consular section and Ambassador’s residence. Additionally, on 8 and 18 August 2025 drone attacks targeted a SOCAR oil depot in the Odessa region, injuring staff and damaging infrastructure.
Azerbaijan stressed that the repeated nature of these incidents raises questions about the possibility of deliberate targeting. Officials reminded Moscow that all relevant information had been previously conveyed through formal diplomatic notes and that the coordinates of Azerbaijani diplomatic sites in Ukraine were submitted to Russia in April 2022, when assurances were given that the Ministry of Defence of Russia would take them into account.
The Ministry stated that attacks on Azerbaijani diplomatic missions are unacceptable and called on Russia to conduct a full investigation and present a detailed explanation regarding the latest strike.
