Fourteen militants were killed in a security operation following a deadly suicide bombing on a military convoy in northwest Pakistan that left 13 soldiers dead.

Fourteen militants have been killed in a security operation launched by the Pakistani army in the country’s northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The operation followed a suicide bombing on a military convoy that killed 13 troops and injured three civilians.

The military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said the attack occurred in North Waziristan, a tribal district bordering Afghanistan. According to the statement, a vehicle-borne suicide attacker initially targeted the convoy but was intercepted. However, a second explosive-laden vehicle managed to ram into one of the military vehicles, resulting in the fatalities.

Security forces launched immediate sanitisation operations in the area. After an intense exchange of fire, fourteen militants were killed, the ISPR said. The military added that operations are ongoing to eliminate any remaining threat in the region.

North Waziristan has long been a stronghold for militants, despite repeated military campaigns aimed at clearing the area. The attack underscores the persistent security challenges faced by Pakistan’s armed forces in the tribal belt, where groups linked to the Taliban and other extremist factions operate.

The army reiterated its commitment to eradicating terrorism from the country, stating that "such cowardly acts cannot deter the resolve of security forces in ensuring peace and stability."
