Over 1 million Afghan refugees have returned to Afghanistan since January, amid calls from the interim government to help rebuild the country.

More than 1 million Afghan refugees have returned to their motherland since the beginning of this year, local media reported.

"If there is no emergency support, the returnees will face many challenges," said Indrika Ratwatte, deputy special representative of the UN Secretary-General in Afghanistan, as quoted by Tolo.

According to the report, approximately 600,000 refugees have returned from Iran, while around 282,000 have returned from Pakistan over the past six months.

The number of returnees from Iran has increased sharply following Israeli strikes on Tehran since June 13, with up to 10,000 individuals entering Afghanistan daily last week.

The Afghan interim government has repeatedly urged refugees to cease living abroad and return home to contribute to rebuilding the war-damaged country. Officials say returnees will play a vital role in reviving economic activity and strengthening national resilience, though humanitarian agencies warn of urgent needs for shelter, food, and employment.

The UN has called for immediate support to help ease the transition for returning families and to avoid a deepening humanitarian crisis as Afghanistan grapples with economic challenges and infrastructure constraints.
