Hamas has formally requested the UK Home Office to revoke its designation as a “banned organization” in the UK.
The legal filing, submitted by a legal team from the London-based Riverway Law firm, seeks to overturn the group’s classification as a terrorist organization, which includes both its political and military wings.
Hamas’s military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, was first proscribed by the UK in 2001, with the political wing, which governs Gaza, being added to the list in 2021. In its statement, Hamas described this designation as “unjust,” arguing that it reflects a bias toward Israeli occupation and violates human rights and democratic principles.
Hamas further criticized the UK government’s policies, calling on Britain to correct what it described as a historical wrong, end its support for Israel, and respect the rights of Palestinians to resist occupation. The group also denounced the suppression of solidarity and support for Palestinians, claiming that such actions constitute violations of legal and humanitarian principles.
