Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has marked the 104th anniversary of Victory Day, honouring the decisive military victory that helped pave the way for the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye.
In a message issued on Sunday, Erdoğan described the 30 August victory as a defining moment in the country’s War of Independence and praised the determination of those who fought despite “all kinds of adversity”.
Erdoğan said the victory, known as the Battle of the Commander-in-Chief, demonstrated that the Turkish nation would “never accept captivity”.
He said the anniversary continued to motivate Türkiye, describing the country’s historic struggle for independence as an enduring part of its national identity.
“Today, we proudly mark the 104th anniversary of the Great Victory,” Erdoğan said, extending his greetings to Turkish citizens around the world as well as the Turkish Cypriot community.
He also paid tribute to the fallen and veterans of the campaign, commemorating Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who led the Turkish forces as commander-in-chief.
Victory Day commemorates the final phase of the Turkish War of Independence, when Turkish forces defeated the Greek army in western Anatolia.
The decisive Battle of Dumlupinar was fought between 26 and 30 August 1922 in what is now Kütahya province. The victory marked a turning point in the struggle, with foreign forces eventually expelled from the territories that would form modern Türkiye.
The Republic of Türkiye was formally established in 1923, with Atatürk becoming its first president.
Looking to the present, Erdoğan said Türkiye was drawing confidence from its history while pursuing ambitions in areas including energy, defence, science and technology.
He also pointed to the country’s foreign policy amid continuing conflicts and instability across the region.
“At a time when wars, conflicts, crises, and political uncertainties are increasing around the world, particularly in our region, Türkiye stands out with its proactive policies,” he said.
Erdoğan added that Türkiye would continue to stand for “rights, law, justice, peace and stability”, despite what he described as attempts to provoke instability.
He concluded his message by thanking citizens for contributing to what he called the “Century of Türkiye” and wished the nation a “Happy August 30 Victory Day”.
