Armenia and Iran are conducting a joint military exercise on the border between the two countries.
The two-day exercise involving special forces units of the Armenian and Iranian armies will end today.
Brigadier General Valiollah Ma’dani, Deputy Commander for Operations of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces, confirmed that the joint drill took place in the Norduz border area, located in Iran’s northwestern East Azerbaijan Province.
"This joint exercise is a proactive measure to ensure the combat readiness of our forces, confront terrorism, and contribute to sustainable peace in the region,” he stated, according to Press TV.
Ma’dani emphasized that the primary goal of the joint drill is to strengthen border security. “Given the sensitive geopolitical position of this area, the strategic importance of our border with Armenia cannot be overstated,” he added.
According to the Armenian Defence Ministry, the Armenian Armed Forces unit will conduct the exercise on the territory of Armenia, while the Iranian Armed Forces unit will conduct the exercise on the territory of Iran.
"They will simulate a joint operation against imaginary terrorist groups attacking the Armenian-Iranian border crossings," added the statement.
