Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he expects Washington and Tehran to reach an agreement after the U.S. midterm elections on 3 November.
Trump suggested Iran was waiting to see the outcome of the vote before deciding its next steps, and expressed confidence that a deal could follow.
“Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far better country than it was before, or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic?”, Trump told UNGA in his address.
Iran and the United States have signalled openness to reviving talks to end the conflict, with Presidents Masoud Pezeshkian and Donald Trump both due to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.
A senior Iranian official called the UN gathering a “golden opportunity” for diplomacy, saying Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if Washington meets its demands. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington is open to talks if they have a prospect of producing a positive outcome.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed the need to keep the Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz open to shipping, the Kremlin said.
The leaders also called for a swift end to fighting in Yemen and said diplomacy remained the way forward in the wider Middle East crisis.
The two key waterways are vital routes for global trade and energy supplies.
Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi has called for the U.S. and Iran to resume talks to de-escalate the conflict, stressing the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and safe.
Speaking to Pakistan’s Mohammad Ishaq Dar in New York, Motegi also thanked Islamabad for its mediation efforts as disruptions to energy supplies and global trade continue.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke by phone with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after arriving in New York for the UN General Assembly.
They discussed the assembly’s agenda and efforts to promote international peace and security.
Araghchi said Tehran would use the UN gathering to present Iran’s positions and what it describes as the rights and interests of its people.
He also criticised what he called a decline in trust in the UN and urged greater respect for international law and institutions.
Belgium’s regulated diesel prices have reached record levels, with B7 diesel rising to €2.50 ($2.88) per litre.
The increase comes as disruptions around key Middle East shipping routes and attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure push Brent crude above $100 a barrel.

Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence issued an all-clear on Tuesday after warning of potential danger in the southern province of Najran.
The agency did not specify the nature of the threat. The alert was issued earlier through the National Early Warning Platform.
The warning comes amid heightened tensions with Yemen’s Houthi group, which has announced a “maritime blockade” on Saudi shipping in the Red Sea and carried out missile and drone attacks on Saudi territory.
Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the U.S. takes initial steps to ease military pressure, Japan’s Kyodo News reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed Iranian official.
The proposal has reportedly been passed to Washington through mediators and includes renewed talks aimed at ending hostilities. Tehran has ruled out a meeting between President Masoud Pezeshkian and Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly this week.
The claim has not been independently verified.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that the UK will provide “defensive air-to-air refueling” support to Saudi Arabia following attacks on the country by Yemen’s Houthi group.
Burnham said the decision came after Saudi Arabia requested “military support.” He approved the request on the advice of Secretary of State for Defence Wes Streeting and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband.
Government officials said the support will be “time limited” and is expected, at least initially, to continue “for weeks.”
“We condemn in the strongest terms the unacceptable continued strikes carried out by the Houthis in Yemen and against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the ministers of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States said in a statement after a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
“We call on the Houthis to immediately cease all military actions, all threats and attacks against civilian shipping, and to return to the political process in good faith.”
