G7 foreign ministers called on Iran to end its arming and support of Houthis in Yemen, which they said constituted a dangerous pattern of escalation that risked undermining international trade and creating global instability.
The meeting took place ahead of the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, where conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as artificial intelligence and global security challenges, are expected to dominate discussions among world leaders this week in New York.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that the UK will provide “defensive air-to-air refueling” support to Saudi Arabia following attacks on the country by Yemen’s Houthi group, the BBC reported.
Burnham said the decision came after Saudi Arabia requested “military support.” He approved the request on the advice of Secretary of State for Defence Wes Streeting and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband.
Government officials said the support will be “time limited” and is expected, at least initially, to continue “for weeks.”
“We condemn in the strongest terms the unacceptable continued strikes carried out by the Houthis in Yemen and against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the ministers of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States said in a statement after a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
“We call on the Houthis to immediately cease all military actions, all threats and attacks against civilian shipping, and to return to the political process in good faith.”
