Two members of the Syrian army were killed in an attack near the city of Manbij in northeastern Aleppo, the country's Defence Ministry said on Saturday. It is the second deadly incident in Syria that ISIS has claimed responsibiltiy for in the past week.

According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, two suicide attackers attempted to storm the building. Security personnel killed one of the militants, while the second detonated an explosive vest after being surrounded.

ISIS declared a new phase of operations against the government of Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa in February. In the same month, the group carried out an attack which killed four Syrian security personnel near Raqqa.

Last year, Sharaa's government joined the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS.

Sharaa himself fought ISIS when he was leader of the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front during Syria's civil war. He severed ties with al Qaeda in 2016.

At the peak of its power during the Syrian civil war a decade ago, ISIS controlled around a quarter or more of Syria, before being driven out of the territory by a U.S.-led coalition and other forces.
