Tehran's Mehrabad Airport hit by airstrikes as fire and smoke seen in Iranian capital

Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport came under attack in heavy airstrikes on early Saturday morning (7 March), Iranian news agencies reported.

Videos purportedly taken in the early hours of Saturday show fire and a large plume of smoke rising over the Iranian capital, in the direction of the major domestic air hub just south of the city centre.

Thermal activity was detected in the vicinity of the airport at around 1:50am local time on Saturday (10:20pm GMT, 6 March).

Earlier, the Israeli military said it has begun a new wave of strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure in Tehran.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia reported they were responding to a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks on Saturday.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the country's Interim Leadership Council had approved the suspension of attacks on neighbouring countries, except where attacks on Iran came from those countries.

The United States and Israel launched a war on Iran last Saturday (February 28). Iran has been responding to the U.S.-Israel strikes with retaliatory attacks into Israel and Gulf states that host U.S. military bases.
