The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet say they carried out targeted strikes on Hamas operatives and infrastructure in the Gaza Strip on Thursday (8 January) after detecting a failed rocket launch from the Gaza City area.
According to the IDF, a rocket was launched from northern Gaza City towards Israeli territory but fell short, landing inside the Gaza Strip near a hospital. A source from Hamas told Reuters it was checking the allegation.
In response, Israeli forces say it struck the launch site and other Hamas terror infrastructure in both northern and southern parts of the Strip.
Medics said at least four people were killed and three others were wounded, including children, in a tent in the western area of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. Another strike killed a person east of the city, near where Israeli forces operate.
Later on Thursday, medics said a man was killed in an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced families in Jabalia in northern Gaza, while another strike killed a person in a tent near Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.
Four other people were killed in a separate strike in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City.
The escalation marks a second alleged violation of the current ceasefire in less than 24 hours.
In a statement on the official Telegram channel on Thursday, the IDF and Shin Bet said they targeted several Hamas operatives, launchers and additional terror infrastructure, and reiterated that such attacks constitute a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire agreement.
They added that Israel would continue to act against any attempts by terror groups in Gaza to target IDF forces or Israeli civilians.
Israeli officials say this incident follows another reported ceasefire breach less than a day earlier when gunfire was directed at troops operating in northern Gaza.
In that attack, the IDF said it struck a senior Hamas figure believed to be advancing assaults on Israeli forces.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, mediated by international actors, has reduced but not eliminated hostilities since the major Israel–Gaza conflict that began in October 2023.
Both sides have accused each other of violations, while periodic rocket fire and Israeli retaliatory strikes continue to punctuate the ceasefire.
