Climate leaders in Baku are calling for a shift from climate commitments to concrete action as day three of Baku Climate Action Week focuses on implementation, cooperation and measurable results.
The day began with a high-level roundtable organised by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, examining the evolution of global climate leadership over the past decade and lessons learned since the Paris Agreement.
Participants discussed how changing geopolitical conditions are affecting international climate cooperation, while also focusing on energy security, economic competitiveness, health, food systems, technology and sustainable development.
A key focus of discussions was the need to strengthen cooperation between governments, international organisations, financial institutions, businesses and civil society to turn climate pledges into practical outcomes.
The discussions come as countries face growing pressure to move beyond negotiations and deliver projects and solutions that can have a direct impact on communities.
During the opening of Climate Week, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said Baku had moved beyond symbolism, describing the city as a “reference point for delivery”.
He said the challenge now is ensuring that commitments made in negotiation rooms translate into projects, investments and real protection for people on the ground.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also addressed the gathering, highlighting the need for continued international cooperation and action on climate challenges.
The discussions in Baku come as the global climate process looks ahead to COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye in November, with participants emphasising that the next stage of climate action must focus on implementation, accountability and measurable progress.
