Kuwait’s Al-Sayer Group plans to export fresh and dried Afghan fruit to Kuwait and other markets while exploring broader trade and investment opportunities in Afghanistan, according to Afghan government statements following talks in Kabul on Tuesday.
Mohammed Nasser Mohammed Al-Sayer, identified by Afghan ministries as the group’s chief executive, met Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Industry and Commerce Minister Nooruddin Azizi.
The Foreign Ministry said the talks focused on trade, investment, security and stability. “Both sides also stressed the importance of expanding economic and trade relations, strengthening bilateral cooperation, facilitating travel, and making effective use of existing investment opportunities in Afghanistan,” it said.
Al-Sayer told Muttaqi that his company intends to establish business relations with Afghanistan and export Afghan produce to Gulf markets and elsewhere.
The ministry said, “He added that his company plans to export fresh and dried fruits from Afghanistan to Kuwait and other markets.”
In a separate meeting, Al-Sayer expressed interest in trade and investment, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. “He said there are significant opportunities for trading Afghan products and exporting them to other countries,” the ministry said.
Azizi welcomed the interest and said his ministry was ready to support investors and traders across industry, trade, investment, transit and enterprises.
The World Bank said in May that Afghanistan’s economy was continuing to grow modestly, with real GDP estimated at 4.8 per cent. However, its external position remained fragile amid a widening trade deficit, strong import demand and weak export performance.
The meetings come as Afghan officials seek to attract private investment and open new markets for domestic products. Neither ministry announced the value, timetable or terms of any planned Al-Sayer investment or fruit-export agreement.
