A private charter flight carrying one of India’s most prominent regional politicians ended in disaster on Wednesday morning, plunging the nation’s wealthiest state into a sudden political crisis and shock.
Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a central figure in the state’s complex political landscape, was confirmed dead after his aircraft plummeted into an open field and burst into flames.
Pawar, who was 66, was travelling to his rural stronghold to campaign for crucial local elections.
The aviation regulator stated that the crash occurred as the Learjet 45 was attempting to navigate its approach to an airstrip in western India.
The tragedy unfolded shortly before noon on Wednesday when the aircraft, operated by VSR Ventures, lost contact with air traffic control during its descent.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the flight had departed from Mumbai, India’s financial capital, and was destined for Baramati, a town approximately 250 km (155 miles) away.
Alongside the Deputy Chief Minister, the crash claimed the lives of two close aides and two experienced pilots. "No person on board has survived," the regulator confirmed in a sombre initial statement, noting that a high-level inquiry has been immediately ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.
Witnesses on the ground described a harrowing scene of devastation. Video footage circulating on local news networks showed thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the charred fuselage, which was scattered across dry scrubland.
One unidentified witness told the ANI news agency that the impact was followed by a series of secondary blasts. "At first it was on fire, after that there were four or five more explosions," the witness said, noting that the intensity of the blaze made it impossible for locals to attempt a rescue before emergency services arrived.
Aviation safety experts and police officials are now securing the site to recover the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).
While early speculation has hinted at potential technical snags during the landing phase, the operator has defended the aircraft's integrity. V.K. Singh, director of VSR Ventures, spoke to broadcaster India Today, asserting the airworthiness of the jet. "The aircraft is 100% safe," Singh insisted, adding that the crew was "fairly experienced" with the route.
The Learjet 45 is a mid-sized business jet widely used globally for corporate transport; however, investigators will likely scrutinise the weather conditions, the pilots' final communications, and the maintenance history of the specific jet involved.
As forensic teams work to identify the remains, the crash has raised fresh questions regarding the regulation and safety of non-scheduled charter operations in India’s bustling aviation sector.
Political impact on Maharashtra
The death of Ajit Pawar creates an immediate and profound vacuum in the politics of Maharashtra, a state that serves as India's economic engine.
Known affectionately as "Dada" (elder brother) by his supporters, Pawar was a heavyweight in the state’s cooperative sector and a master of political manoeuvring.
He was a key ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, having led a dramatic split in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 2023. By breaking away from his uncle, the veteran statesman Sharad Pawar, Ajit had aligned his faction with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form a coalition government, securing his position as Deputy Chief Minister.
His journey to Baramati on Wednesday was politically significant; the region is the Pawar family’s ancestral bastion and a constituency they have dominated for decades.
He was scheduled to canvas for support in upcoming local body elections—polls that are viewed as a litmus test for the ruling coalition's popularity ahead of future state assembly challenges.
His unexpected demise throws the local electoral dynamics into disarray and leaves his faction of the NCP facing an uncertain future without its primary tactician and charismatic face.
Tributes poured in rapidly from across the political spectrum, reflecting Pawar's deep influence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his grief, describing the death as "shocking and saddening" and acknowledging Pawar's contributions to the state's development.
Opposition leaders, despite their fierce ideological battles with Pawar following his 2023 defection, also expressed their condolences, marking a rare moment of unity in India’s fractured political arena.
As the state government declares a period of official mourning, questions loom over who will succeed him in the deputy role and how his faction will sustain its momentum within the ruling alliance.
For the people of Baramati, the loss is personal; they have lost not just a representative, but the scion of a family dynasty that has defined their region's identity for half a century.
