Spanish military firefighters worked through the night into Sunday to contain the La Mierla wildfire, which continued to spread across Guadalajara province in central Spain.
The blaze, which began on Thursday, expanded rapidly during the night as strong winds pushed the flames through the Sierra Norte area.
Regional officials said the affected area had increased to approximately 13,000 hectares by late Sunday morning, up from an earlier estimate of 9,000 hectares.
Around 800 people from 21 municipalities have been evacuated to safety. Authorities said the fire advanced almost 14 kilometres overnight but had not entered any of the evacuated communities.
Members of Spain’s Military Emergency Unit joined regional crews on the ground, using hoses, firebreaks and heavy equipment to slow the spread of the flames.
More than 200 personnel, organised into 32 teams, were involved in the response, while aircraft resumed operations after daylight.
The Castilla-La Mancha regional government maintained a Level 2 emergency, indicating that the fire posed a risk to residential areas and important infrastructure.
Officials said changing wind conditions remained the main challenge for crews attempting to bring the blaze under control.
A second major wildfire near Orés, in the north-eastern province of Zaragoza, remained under surveillance on Sunday.
Authorities revised the estimated burned area from 15,800 to around 14,400 hectares after examining satellite images.
Five municipalities in Zaragoza province and one community in neighbouring Navarre had been evacuated. However, regional officials said there were no longer active flames, with only columns of smoke visible in parts of the affected area.
