Climatologists say Poland has logged its warmest December in 74 years, with 2025 continuing a run of above-average temperatures and repeated national records.
Professor Bogdan Chojnicki told the Polish news agency PAP that Poland had broken several benchmarks, with TVP World reporting his remarks on Sunday. He said the country set its 15th daily average temperature record of the year on 11 December, when the national daily average reached 8.2C.
Chojnicki said the warmth seen on 9, 10 and 11 December had not been recorded since 1951.
Figures from Poland’s Institute of Meteorology and Water Management showed a wide spread on 11 December, with the highest temperature reaching 14.5C in south-western Poland, while the lowest fell to minus 6.6C in southern mountainous areas.
For comparison, during the 1991 to 2020 climate reference period, the average December maximum was 4.1C in northern coastal areas, while the average minimum was minus 8.8C in mountainous regions.
Chojnicki noted that milder winters may reduce heating demand, but warned that rising temperatures linked to global warming increase longer-term risks, including a higher likelihood of droughts.
