Christian Dior has secured one of fashion's most coveted celebrity endorsements after both Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce wore custom haute couture designs by creative director Jonathan Anderson for their wedding in New York.

Major boost for Jonathan Anderson

The commission is widely seen as a major victory for Dior as it competes with French rival Chanel for high-profile celebrity clients.

Although no official wedding photographs have yet been released from the tightly controlled ceremony at Madison Square Garden, designing Swift's wedding gown is regarded by industry observers as one of the most prestigious bridal commissions in recent years.

The honour comes just a year after Anderson took charge of Dior following an 11-year tenure leading Loewe.

Dior said both wedding looks were created at its historic ateliers on Avenue Montaigne in Paris in close collaboration with the couple.

Luxury rivalry

The commission comes as Chanel's new creative director, Matthieu Blazy, has also sought to raise the brand's profile, recently designing Dua Lipa's beaded haute couture wedding gown for her ceremony in Sicily.

However, analysts say the global attention surrounding Swift's wedding is likely to provide Dior, one of LVMH's flagship brands, with significantly greater exposure at a time when demand for luxury goods has softened.

With more than 270 million Instagram followers and one of the world's most devoted fan bases, Swift represents an unrivalled marketing opportunity for any fashion house.

Weeks of speculation

Speculation over the designer behind Swift's dress dominated entertainment and fashion media ahead of the wedding, with Stella McCartney and Sarah Burton among the names most frequently mentioned.

Prediction platform Kalshi had installed Dior as the favourite before the ceremony, ahead of Oscar de la Renta.

Known for mixing luxury labels with independent designers, Swift previously chose American fashion house Ralph Lauren for her engagement photographs and commissioned her engagement ring from independent jeweller Artifex Fine Jewelry before ultimately selecting French haute couture for her wedding.

Bridal spotlight not always enough

The timing of Dior's announcement comes just ahead of Anderson's Autumn/Winter Haute Couture presentation in Paris and follows two other high-profile bridal creations he designed this summer for Chinese model Ming Xi and Brazilian influencer Elisa Zarzur.

Industry analysts note, however, that celebrity weddings do not always translate into commercial success.

Dolce & Gabbana, which designed Lauren Sánchez's wedding gown for her marriage to Jeff Bezos, has been pursuing financial restructuring, while Valentino, the designer of Nicola Peltz's wedding dress, has also faced financial pressures.
