KazMunayGas (KMG) and China’s Sinopec have reached an agreement on the terms for jointly implementing the Berezovski subsoil use project in Kazakhstan’s West Kazakhstan region. The signed documents outline joint activities and formalize the strategic partnership between the two companies.
Kurmangazy Iskaziyev, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of JSC NC KazMunayGas, met with Zhao Quanmin, President of Sinopec-Kazakhstan in Astana on Monday (16 June). The two sides discussed opportunities for cooperation, focusing particularly on joint geological exploration projects.
The companies have agreed to implement the project on a 50/50 basis, with Sinopec funding the exploration phase. The work program includes conducting 2D seismic surveys across 300 linear kilometres, 3D seismic surveys over 300 square kilometres, and drilling one exploration well to a depth of 7,000 metres.
“The potential of the Berezovsky site, identified by KMG through regional studies and 2D seismic surveys conducted in 2023–2024, lies in subsalt formations within the northern margin of the Caspian Basin—an area characterized by deep, geologically and technically challenging conditions,” said Iskaziyev.
“Sinopec brings strong expertise in deep geological research, drilling, and field development, giving us confidence that the planned exploration activities for the Berezovsky project will be successfully carried out,” added Iskaziyev.
