In a move that could significantly boost India's artificial intelligence landscape, tech leaders OpenAI and Meta Platforms have engaged in separate discussions with Reliance Industries, according to a report by The Information.
The talks, reported on Saturday, focus on forging potential partnerships to expand AI offerings in India.
One proposal under discussion involves a collaboration between Reliance Jio and OpenAI to distribute the ChatGPT service, potentially making it more accessible to a broader audience. The report also mentioned that OpenAI has considered lowering its ChatGPT subscription fee from $20 a month to a significantly lower price, though it remains unclear if this pricing strategy has been discussed with Reliance.
In addition to these discussions, Reliance is reportedly exploring options to sell OpenAI's models to its enterprise customers via an application programming interface (API). The Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate is also considering hosting and running both OpenAI and Meta models locally, ensuring that local customer data remains within India. Notably, Reliance has floated the idea of using a massive three-gigawatt data center currently in the planning stages in Jamnagar, Gujarat—the company touts it as potentially the largest data center in the world.
Neither Meta nor OpenAI, nor Reliance Industries, immediately responded to requests for comment on the report. The Information's insights come at a time when reliance on advanced AI is rapidly increasing globally, and localizing data is becoming a priority for companies operating in sensitive markets.
As one of India's largest conglomerates, with interests spanning petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas, telecommunications, retail, and green energy, Reliance Industries is strategically positioned to help accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge AI technologies across the region. The potential partnerships could pave the way for new AI-driven services and products that further integrate digital innovations into India's growing tech ecosystem.
