U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday (19 September) the creation of an “AI Force” and plans to appoint an artificial intelligence (AI) czar, while rejecting calls to slow the development of increasingly powerful AI systems.
Trump said the initiative would be modelled on the U.S. Space Force, which he established during his first term.
“For this purpose, I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that he would announce an AI czar “in the near future”.
Trump did not explain how the new body would operate, where it would sit within the federal government or what powers it would have.
The announcement comes amid growing debate over whether governments should impose stronger safeguards as AI systems rapidly advance.
Trump has rejected calls for a slowdown, arguing that additional restrictions could undermine the U.S. in its technological competition with China.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” he said, arguing that harmful uses of AI could instead be addressed through existing criminal and civil laws.
His position contrasts with warnings from several leading figures in the industry, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, about potentially severe consequences from increasingly powerful AI without adequate safeguards.
Trump earlier this week dismissed fears surrounding AI as a “hoax”, arguing that the U.S. already had sufficient regulatory powers over technology companies.
He also described AI as a major economic opportunity, saying it could eventually account for as much as 25 per cent of U.S. GDP.
“We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way,” Trump said.
