North Korea may send more troops to support Russia’s war in Ukraine as early as July or August, according to South Korea’s intelligence agency, which also says Pyongyang is continuing arms shipments to Moscow.
The information came during a closed-door parliamentary briefing, according to lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun. The assessment is based on recent troop mobilizations in North Korea and a high-level Russian security official’s visit to Pyongyang.
In return for sending ammunition and missiles, Pyongyang is believed to be receiving Russian technical support for satellite and missile programs.
After a period of limited public statements, both Moscow and Pyongyang have now acknowledged the presence of North Korean troops in the war, particularly in operations related to the Kursk region.
The cooperation follows a mutual defence agreement signed by both countries’ leaders in June 2024.
