Canada warns the U.S. to reach a trade deal by 21 July or face new steel and aluminium tariffs, as PM Carney vows to protect Canadian workers from U.S. measures.
Speaking at a news conference in Ottawa, Carney said the plan includes a tariff rate quota that limits imports from countries with trade deals, with high tariffs applied to anything exceeding the limit.
The move aims to support Canadian steel manufacturers, already hit hard by a 50% tariff from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney emphasized the need to defend Canadian workers and industry, adding that counter-tariffs on U.S. metals would depend on the progress of trade talks.
A new bill, C-5, also proposes fast-tracking large-scale infrastructure projects needing steel and aluminium. At the G7 Summit, Carney and Trump agreed to finalize a deal within 30 days.
