South Korea’s Lee and Trump agree to work quickly on tariff deal

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone Friday, their first conversation since Lee’s election earlier this week.

Trump congratulated Lee on his victory, and Lee stressed that the alliance between South Korea and the US remains key to Seoul’s foreign policy, according to Yonhap news agency.

Both leaders agreed to work toward a swift, mutually acceptable agreement on tariffs. They also committed to pushing for real progress in working-level talks soon.

The US imposed a 25% tariff on South Korean goods in April under Trump’s global “reciprocal” tariff policy. That rate was temporarily lowered to 10% for 90 days until July 8.

Trump invited Lee to visit the US, and they plan to meet in person as soon as possible. Possible meetings could happen during the G7 summit in Canada (June 15-17) or the NATO summit in the Netherlands (June 24-25).

Lee was elected on June 3 after former leader Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached last year for trying to impose martial law.
