UN Security Council expected to vote Wednesday on Gaza ceasefire resolution

The United Nations Security Council is likely to vote on Wednesday, June 4, on a draft resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, according to diplomats.

The move comes after the ten elected members of the 15-member council pushed for action, urging a vote on a text that also demands the release of all hostages held by Hamas and others.

The draft resolution further calls for the immediate lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid into Gaza and insists on its safe and large-scale distribution, including by the U.N. across the enclave.

To pass, the resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from any of the five permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, or France.
