India’s space agency faces setback as satellite launch fails

India’s space agency, ISRO, has reported a failure in launching its EOS-9 surveillance satellite into the planned orbit after a technical problem during the rocket’s flight.

The PSLV-C61 rocket took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday morning. However, during the third stage of the launch, a drop in motor pressure caused the mission to fail, ISRO chief V Narayanan confirmed.

“This mission could not be completed due to a fall in the chamber pressure of the motor case,” Narayanan told local media. He added that the agency is reviewing the entire launch to understand what went wrong and will share more details soon.

Despite this setback, India’s space program has made rapid progress over the years, achieving milestones like the Mars orbiter mission in 2014 and a successful moon landing in 2023.

ISRO has faced only a few failures in its PSLV rocket missions since the program started, with the first one back in 1993. A committee will now investigate the latest incident to find the cause.
