Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin might be skipped if a ceasefire agreement is reached during technical talks in Istanbul. He also called for increased sanctions if Russia shows no willingness to end the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that a proposed meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin could be called off if both sides agree on a ceasefire during ongoing technical talks in Istanbul.
Speaking at a press conference in Ankara, Zelenskyy stressed that if Moscow fails to show willingness to engage in ceasefire discussions, the international community should increase political and economic pressure on Russia, including imposing further sanctions.
"Russia does not feel that it needs to end (the war), which means there is not enough political, economic and other pressure on the Russian Federation," Zelenskyy said. "And so we ask, if there is no ceasefire, if there are no serious decisions... we ask for appropriate sanctions."
